In the ongoing appeal trial against Squid Game actor Oh Yeong-soo, South Korean prosecutors have once again requested a one-year prison sentence for the 80-year-old actor. He is accused of sexually harassing a woman in 2017 through inappropriate hugging and unwanted kissing. However, the indictment was not filed until November 2022 by the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office.

In March 2024, Oh was sentenced in the first trial to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, along with 40 hours of mandatory education on sexual offenses. He appealed the ruling. In the current proceedings, prosecutors accuse him of continuing to deny all charges and of discrediting the victim. In his final statement, Oh expressed regret over the situation but once again maintained his innocence. A verdict is expected on June 3, 2025.
Oh Yeong-soo is considered a distinguished stage actor with more than 60 years of theater experience. For his portrayal of Player 001 (Oh Il-nam) in Squid Game, he became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in January 2022. However, the allegations have already had a significant impact on his career: his character did not appear in the second season of the series, nor was he featured in flashbacks. The show’s producers have not commented publicly on this decision.
